ADVICE FOR WORKING CONVENTIONS
Hello, all! Time for another missive from 1First Comics, this time about how to make the most of your comic convention! Whether you have purchased a table at an artists alley or a booth on the main floor, remember that making your money back is a priority! Here are some helpful hints that will hopefully help you achieve that particular goal!
1. DON'T IGNORE POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS. We see it all the time - creators or staff at a booth more interested in their phones than the convention attendees. Not to put too fine a point on it, but you can romance your phone at home on your own time. Conventions are for selling your book, making new fans and friends, and reconnecting with old ones. If you are in the process of talking with friends or fans and someone new comes up, a quick "I'll be right with you" lets them know they are not being dismissed out of hand.
2. KNOW YOUR PRODUCT. If someone has a question about your book, you'd better have an answer ready. If it's not your book, but it's on your table, read it and familiarize yourself with it. If you don't know what's going on with a particular book, what makes you think a con attendee will spend good money figuring it all out for you? Which brings us to our next point...
3. HAVE A GOOD PITCH READY. Your pitch should be short, sweet, and attention-grabbing. Whether it's a quick (and we do mean "quick") rundown of the plot or a tagline meant to elicit interest, what you say should either have the potential customer asking more questions or handing over some money. Note that any pitch worth its salt should last no longer than a minute... anything longer and you risk boring the other person into disinterest.
4. MAKE THE BEST DISPLAY YOU CAN. Heaps of books spread haphazardly over a bare table looks like a garage sale, not a convention spread. If you don't have the budget for things like banners, wire racks, or other displays, there are affordable alternatives that will allow you to present your books in a better light. Remember, when it comes to attracting attention to your comics or graphic novels, vertical is better than horizontal, so at the very least get something to prop them up if you can't afford anything else.
5. EXTRAS ARE HELPFUL. Freebies like mini posters, stickers, pins, or postcards can help make a sale and let customers know you appreciate their support. In addition to that, postcards are especially handy because you can put additional information on them like your website, email address, social media, etc.
6. HAVE FUN! Even though you're at the convention to make sales, make sure to schedule some time for yourself to do what you want to do! Visit that legend you've been a fan of for years! Check out that panel or buy that limited edition whatever! We all got into this industry because we were fans first, so don't let that part of your life escape you!
That about wraps this topic up! We hope it helps and if you've got any questions, comments, or personal observations, let us know! We'd love to hear from ya!
